Stuff and Goal #2

This week has been beautiful.  So I have been trying to be that mom that I loathe being - you know, the one who spends quality time outdoors with the kids.  I am a results based person, so I sorta just like to do stuff that has an end goal.  Most of the time I spend really working with my kids is educational based or cleaning based- as in, I make them and show them how to clean things- you're welcome, future daughters-in-law.

So to prove I did good mom stuff:
boys on their bikes, with bells - because we hate the neighbors it would seem  (we don't)
No matter what cool activity we engage in, he is stuck doing this.
Dominic's helicopter - act impressed.
This week I'm teaching a new somewhat prep intensive reading/art summer school course in the mornings, my sister and I are trading childcare, and we are going to DISNEYLAND! next week, so much packing awaits us.  I had Gretchen's girls this afternoon and the lunch fixings were slim.  I dared not drag the 4 munchkins (Sol's at Totus Tuus) to ALDI for an embarrassment-fest, so I broke down and (if you're a healthy person insert "whipped up a salad" and skip this paragraph) bought McDonalds.  I don't do that much.  For one, it costs more than I typically shell out and it isn't my ideal healthy meal either.  But I did.
Coletti asked me 3 times "What is this drink?"  What she really meant was:
"What is this God-nectar of delight?"   I call it "Koolaid".

More outdoorsy-ness.
Shawn's garden, one corner away from weeded.

My entire back patio and driveway look like a plot for war.  Enemies beware.

Goal #2 has a little less ambition than the already less than dazzling Goal #1.

I'm going easy on myself during this already busy week:

Arrive on-time to everything and keep the house in order.
IDEAL
I bet June never drags into the cub scout ceremony with untied shoes on the Beav.
And those cabinets....
REAL
I would show my real with a photo, but there is not a picture chaotic enough to represent it.  I googled "flustered mom" and was shocked not to find my photo in the search.  I'm constantly heading out the door with kids in tow for this and that, leaving a mess, forgetting a baseball glove, and breaking laws written for bad drivers like me to get somewhere before 15 minutes late.  I really don't want to nag my boys this week to get in the car and race off.  And I want to maintain some order.  And I don't want to rely on my super husband to finish the cleaning and dress the baby in the process.  He's been working tons and cashed in lots of PTO just to pay Wilson's hospital bills.  So he deserves a break.

Now to keep a pepper-print promise to Dom and Francesca.  Then to pick up Sol - on time.

Goal Revisited

First off- I was having a rough night on my last post, but of course, all is well.

Solomon in deep, monotone foghorn voice:
"Awww Wilson Ignatius, I love you because you are so cute.  Did you know you are so cute?"
(I'm certain he does know.)
So, initially, I thought I would complete goal #1 in one week and come up with some other need for improvement in my home and quickly move to perfection.  (I'm a realist-no.  Optimist?-no.  Living in a fantasy?  BINGO.)  So perfect laundry and closets in a week?  Not so.  So, let's pretend that I'm grading not on timeliness, but on completion.

Goal:  Get ALL the laundry clean, ironed, and put away.
And make my closet a bit more Martha Stewart . . . the organized part, she's not really my fashion icon.
IDEAL
BEFORE
REAL AFTER.
OCD clothing sort included.
File:ArrestedDevelopmentS4.jpg
Season 4 of AD made this much more fun.   Welcome back, old friend.

Moses?  No.  Wilson.  Wrong basket.

And I get an A- (I'm a generous self-grader). I did wash, iron, and hang it *all*.
*Turns out, your family cannot remain naked while you do all the laundry.*

I still need to go through my son's closets for outgrown and out of season wear.

I also got rid of a heap of not-so-lovely and not-so-fitty clothes - Shawn too!
To donate to . . . somewhere.  Although, I might still want that red sequined scarf-belt.

This blog start and goal was also a blogs-periment of sorts to see if this would be a help or hindrance to me as a mother, wife, and person in general.  I have been far more productive since I started it- and so it will go on.  Like my heart.
Peace out.
This post was brought to you by:  Dirty garage and obsession with my youngest child.  And Celine Dion.

Autism and Honesty

I was going to work on laundry tonight, but I'm choosing to feel sorry for myself instead.

My 6 year old was diagnosed at age 3 with high functioning Autism, and later, ADHD.  I was at first, so sad, but now, I am, as a rule, just coping with it and dealing with it, working with him, all that stuff.  But there are times when it is tough: really, really tough.

Today, Solomon graduated from Kindergarten in a regular education classroom at a Catholic school, and didn't stand out at the song they sang or receiving his certificate.  So, all in all, a good morning, I worry a bit about first grade....but cross that bridge...

We make him play T-ball.  Because he would never play a sport if no one forced him to.  Because he doesn't have friends and needs to learn to socialize.  Because summers need to have structure too. Because we don't want his school friends to forget him while they play with their non-autistic friends.  Because he can't crawl into a hole and be alone.  Because we suggested soccer, but he chose T-ball.  Because Angry Birds is not a sport.  Because you have to have self control and team skills.  Because he has to survive the next 9 years in PE.  Because sometimes your parents make you do stuff when you're 6.  and Autistic.  and need to be part of something.

Anyways, tonight, Solomon played his first official game of T-ball.  Let me start by saying that hand eye coordination sports were never my thing, and my husband played a little in gradeschool, but isn't real athletic now.  So, to be fair, genetics are not in this kid's favor.  But, let's also be clear that I don't expect my kid to catch balls, throw far, knock it out of the park...you know, he doesn't have to be good at T-ball.  But this is his second year, I would like to see him:  hitting the ball off the tee successfully, paying attention and trying to get balls if they come towards him, not clowning around, and grabbing grounders.  THAT would be what I would expect from a not-too-athletic 6 year old playing T-ball for the second year in a row.  The reality is that myself or his father have to stand directly behind him on the field and give him almost constant reminders to 'get in the ready position', 'get your eye on the ball', 'get off the ground', 'stand up', and 'pay attention'.  Now, I know that LOTS of kids don't pay attention sometimes, but even with this, he is not paying attention the whole time.  Batting is almost a decline from last year.  Running bases looked great every night but tonight, he sensed that we weren't right behind him, I guess, and thought he'd take advantage of the opportunity to screw around.  And you can bet I was unable to relax while he was in the dugout when I saw his hands around a teammate's neck because they were 'tagging him' aka asking him to scoot down so they could all sit down.

Then, many of his teammates, are relatively good for 6 year olds.  They are actually making clean plays with a lot less of the ball chasing than I have ever seen in T-ball.  So heightened contrast- and we're that much more aware.

His coach, teammates, and their parents are really understanding, and no one even cares that we have to stay right with him in the field or that he constantly screws up, but it stinks anyways.  I am doubly insecure nonetheless.

When the game is over, I leave in a separate car for a brief stop at a graduation party.  While there, I spend 10 of the 16 minutes lamenting this frustrating experience.  I come home to kids mostly in bed, and watch a few shows on the computer to unsuccessfully un-depress me.  Then I think about it, cry about it, (pray about it?  Should do that more.) and mull it all over.

I remember something that puts me over the edge.  Tonight, as I stood behind him in a position where gratefully, the ball didn't come, nagging him incessantly, his teammates made a beautifully clean play and got a player out at first.  (Which means nothing in terms of the other player- they never send them to the dugout in T-ball.)  Still, I was impressed with this play and cheered loudly after they did it.  Solomon turns to me and says, "Did I do it?  Did I do good?"  I was caught off guard and said something like, "I was cheering because they got the ball at 1st, but you were ready..."

Wow.  He exhibited his first interest in the game that we are forcing him to play.  And it was for cheers.  He really wants that kind of cheering for him, and in all my embarrassment and nonstop hounding, I never got a chance to give it to him, or didn't make a chance.  Not once on that field.

Now I cry some more.

It is so hard.

For ALL of us.

How did this happen?

Those are rolled up diapers.
Long story long:
My autistic ADHD son, Solomon, woke up in a going-to-make-up-songs-like-'hit Dominic'-mood this morning, earning himself 5 chores for after school.  I had a bunch of diapers tied up from a baby shower, one of those adorable, yet practical while still impractical diaper cakes.  But I'm not so jerky as to complain about a thoughtful and time consuming to make party gift...is there anything nicer than this shower for a 3rd child of the same sex as the first two?  I'm so spoiled.  Proof below.

very cute diaper cake......and food, which is even better

So blowout, untie diaper, repeat...then, BINGO! 6 year old chore time!  After a few chores and field day, Sol was in an annoyingly tired but hyper giggly mood.  This 10 minute job of cutting all the ribbons took him exactly 1 hour, making us 15 minutes late to dinner at my sisters.  So, did the diapers get put into the diaper bin?  No, we just left them in a pile.  A neat pile.  Then we came home.  Bedtime went okay, which means I only had to take Dom's Duplos away for tomorrow and move him to my room til he fell asleep.

blinding pillow compliments of Grandma

But my guess is he didn't go straight to sleep.....

I will though.  That mess can wait until tomorrow.  Just keeping it real.

Goal

IDEAL

I wish.  Except for all the drab tops and pants.  But it is super organized because I found it here:  http://www.marthastewartclosets.com.  I'm pretty sure she could make crap look neat and pretty.

REAL
This is my closet. messy messy messy
Unfortunately, this is also my laundry.  Clean but not folded, dirty, un-ironed, unwashed, undried, and.....well, NOT ideal.
So my goal this week:  Get all the laundry clean, put away, and organized.

But first, Wilson's nails are so long they are actually dirty.  Why?  Because 2 weeks ago, I trimmed them, and clipped a bit of his thumb skin.  My always happy baby layered on the guilt for a full 20 minutes! and not even the always soothing mama-milk could comfort him.  Mother of the year, right here.  I think I apologized to him 300 million times....forgiveness was a long time coming.
So let us hope for no tears as I trim his nails carefully tonight.  I really don't feel like crying.

After, I will survive the laundry project with this margarita slush and some dated season of Project Runway I haven't seen on the computer.  And now you can understand why everything I wear is "so Season 3". . . . er. . . so . . . "store that sells clothing and food side by side".  I can't blame Project Runway.
At the end of this week, an honest follow up will hopefully bring my real that much closer to my ideal.

I made...

a book!  Okay, WE made a book, as in, my sister, Gretchen, and I.  It is a Mother's Day tradition for us to make a book for our mom, aunt, grandma's, and sometimes in-laws.  We come up with an idea, I write text, we make costumes and take photos, and then Gretchen does the labor-heavy Photoshop work--and some company does the printing.

This year our little 'animals' were animals.  Here is a peek at my favorite pages-believe it or not, this isn't all of them.

This is my favorite of Sol, Dom and Wilson.
